The Latin American Center for Sexuality and Human Rights (CLAM/IMS/UERJ) invited colleagues, friends, and collaborators to the international seminar “CLAM 20 YEARS: a memory of the formation of a field of studies on sexuality and human rights in Brazil and Latin America”.

Over the course of two days, the seminar examined the trajectory and future perspectives of studies on gender and sexuality in Brazil and Latin America. The changes that took place in the socio-political context in which CLAM’s work was developed were addressed, as well as the historical and institutional conditions that made possible the formation of a field of studies on gender, rights, and sexual politics in the social and human sciences of Brazil and Latin America.

CLAM, linked to the Institute of Social Medicine at UERJ, was created in 2002. Throughout its history, it has fostered debates on gender, sexuality, health and human rights, contributing to the reduction of gender inequalities and the fight against discrimination against sexual and ethnic-racial minorities. Its activities include the production, organization and dissemination of knowledge on gender, sexuality and rights from the perspective of social sciences. Since its inception, CLAM has stimulated national and international dialogue in civil society and in the institutional public sphere, contributing to the training and information of activists, scholars, public policy makers, health professionals, educators and legal practitioners, among others, on these topics.

The event was held in person at the Institute of Social Medicine at UERJ, with online transmission, thus enabling remote monitoring. The seminar included an opening conference, three thematic panels and a closing conference, all with the participation of both Brazilian and international researchers and CLAM researchers. We counted an audience of 140 participants, including students, researchers and other interested parties, in person, and 200 online throughout the event.

Participation certificates were issued to the listeners.

A commemorative volume developed from the reflections and debates of the seminar is planned to be published.
