Areas of interest

SEXUAL RIGHTS AND POLITICS

To critically examine the concept of sexual rights in relation to the idea of sexual health;

To discuss similarities and differences between the notions of sexual rights and reproductive rights;

To consider critically the various discourses present in Latin American societies concerning human and sexual rights, focusing on such topics as abortion, civil rights of gays, lesbians and transgendered people, sex workers and of people living with HIV/AIDS.

SEXUAL BEHAVIORS AND CULTURES

To investigate cultural practices relative to sexuality, conjugality and parenting, considering differences of race/ethnicity, class and gender;

To encourage investigation and discussion of sexual practices and of cultural representations of sexuality at different stages of life, with particular emphasis on adolescents;

To critically examine the connection between the media, consumerism and the pharmaceutical industry in the production of the ideal of a sexually potent body.

SEXUAL KNOWLEDGES

To analyze critically, from the perspective of sociology and human rights, the scientific theories and practices that have traditionally treated sex as an object of investigation and intervention (sexology, gynecology, psychiatry, etc.);

To discuss the topic of sexual health from the perspective of social, economic and legal structures, in order to consider sexuality from the point of view of its public regulation;

To confer visibility on alternative or subaltern sexual knowledges.
