Issue 39 (2023) – available online
The CLAM magazine, a reference journal for research on gender and sexuality in Latin America, completed its 2023 issue in December. Below are the texts already available from issue 39.
With fourteen years of history, Sexualidad, Salud y Sociedad is a key journal focused on publishing original articles about the cultural and political dimensions of sexualities in Latin American contexts. Since its founding in 2009, the journal has maintained an editorial line committed to disseminating works and research aligned with the defense of human rights, aiming to contribute to public debate related to the construction of positive political agendas for different sexual minorities.
In recent years, due to the resurgence of far-right movements in Brazil and various parts of the continent, the editorial team of Sexualidad, Salud y Sociedad faces significant challenges. The field of humanities has been particularly affected by the progressive cutting of resources directed at funding scientific projects, stemming from initiatives propelled by intense attacks on public universities and the legitimacy of academic work (Carrara, 2021).
With a work routine linked to CLAM/IMS/UERJ, the editorial team of Sexualidad, Salud y Sociedad has operated in a context of heightened surveillance over public discourses related to sexualities. Thus, it is with great satisfaction that we present Issue 39 of the journal, developed throughout 2023. This is the first volume to be published after four years of living with tensions marked by constant attacks on human rights, women’s rights, and LGBTQIA+ populations in Brazil.
The issue consists of two dossiers—“Feminism, Gender, and Sexuality in Digital Technologies: Latin American Perspectives,” organized by Horacio Sívori, Carolina Parreiras, and Paz Peña, and “Social Regulations of Gender, Sexuality, and Age: Reflections on Relationships, Practices, and Discourses from a Regional Perspective,” organized by Ana Cecília Gaitán and Pilar Anastasía González (the latter to be made available soon on the Scielo platform); in addition to continuously received articles (gradually available on the Scielo platform until the end of 2023) and reviews of significant works in the field.
In this last section, books by Veena Das, Timothy Eugene Murphy, Camila Fernandes, and Rahul Rao were respectively reviewed by Lucas Freire, Alexandre Gaspari, Júlia Freire, and Amanda Ferreira, to whom we express our gratitude for their contributions.
