This report contains the results of a study conducted in Argentina as part of the research project Sexuality, Science, and Profession in Latin America, coordinated by CLAM. Its main objective is to understand how the field of sexology is shaped in the Latin American region. With this diagnosis, we believe we are contributing one more piece to a puzzle that needs to be assembled to better understand some Argentinean paradoxes.

In this sense, we hope the reading will help answer questions such as: How much do two discourses that reflect and influence sexuality today—sexology and feminism—interact or contradict each other? What factors could explain the absence of sexual diversity on the horizon of interests within contemporary Argentine sexology? Why has the language of sexual and reproductive rights failed to permeate the discourse of the main figures in the field? We also hope the text will provoke new questions.

Perhaps some compatriots will feel a bittersweet taste or nostalgia for a “golden age” when Argentine doctors, psychologists, and educators made a significant contribution to sexology in Latin America. This is neither our intention nor our conclusion. We believe that beyond any possible shortcomings, this careful reconstruction of the origins and development of sexology in Argentina will be a useful resource for those researching sexuality, gender, and the medical profession, among other topics, as well as for those engaged in the broad and diverse field of sexual and reproductive rights activism.
