In the late 1990’s, anthropologist Don Kulick, Professor of Anthropology at New York University (NYU), carried out ethnographic fieldwork with Brazilian transgendered prostitutes who work in the streets of Salvador, capital of Bahia, a state in Northeastern Brazil. As a result, he wrote the book Travesti: Sex, Gender, and Culture Among Brazilian Transgendered Prostitutes (University of Chicago Press, 1998), which has now been launched in Portuguese by Fiocruz Editora, Rio de Janeiro. On May 21, 2008, Professor Kulick gave a talk at the Latin American Center on Sexuality and Human Rights (CLAM), Rio de Janeiro State University (UERJ), on travestis and the politics of scandal in Brazilian society.
