BARBARA PIRES

PhD in Social Anthropology from the Graduate Program in Social Anthropology at the National Museum of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. Currently a postdoctoral researcher at the same institution. Between 2021 and 2022, she completed another postdoctoral period at the Institute of Social Medicine at the State University of Rio de Janeiro. In 2022, she participated in consultancy work for UN Women Brazil, developing research, teaching, and outreach materials on gender mainstreaming in sports organizations in collaboration with the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB). Between 2023 and 2024, she was involved in another consultancy, this time internationally, where she was responsible for the production, revision, and enhancement of knowledge products within the framework of intra- and inter-regional knowledge-sharing strategies for gender and sport projects. She has worked in the third sector as a coordinator and/or researcher in several institutions, such as in the LGBTI+ Public Policy Observatory Research in the State of Rio de Janeiro (2021), developed by the NGO Aliança Nacional LGBTI in partnership with the Grupo Arco-Íris de Cidadania LGBT. She also worked as a researcher at the UERJ Nucleus, providing technical and academic support to the state program Rio Sem LGBTIfobia. She is a member of the Latin American Center on Sexuality and Human Rights (CLAM – IMS/UERJ) and the Center for Studies on Bodies, Genders, and Sexualities (NuSEX – MN/UFRJ). Editorial assistant at Mana: Estudos de Antropologia Social and Associate Editor of Revista Sexualidad, Salud y Sociedad. Her research focuses on hormonal science and the LGBTI+ population, especially scientific consensus, medical protocols, care in hospital settings, and sports regulations.
