LAURA LOWENKRON

Anthropologist and Associate Professor at the Institute of Social Medicine of the State University of Rio de Janeiro (IMS/UERJ). She is the Executive Coordinator of the Latin American Center on Sexuality and Human Rights (CLAM), a researcher with the Transnational Research Network on Dispossessed, Violated, and Assaulted Motherhoods (REMA/CNPq/Pro-Humanities), and a member of the Working Group on the Anthropology of the State and Institutions of the Latin American Association of Anthropology (ALA). She holds a Master’s degree (2008) and a PhD (2012) in Social Anthropology from the National Museum/UFRJ, and a postdoctoral fellowship at the Gender Studies Center PAGU, at the University of Campinas (Unicamp), funded by FAPESP (2015). Her work focuses on the fields of gender and sexuality studies and the anthropology of the state. She has experience conducting institutional and documentary ethnographies, with research addressing the following topics: sexual violence, governance of childhood, pedophilia, human trafficking, care, motherhood, and sexual and reproductive rights. She is the author of the book “The Contemporary Monster: the social construction of pedophilia on multiple levels”, published by CLAM/EdUERJ in the Sexuality, Gender and Society series (Lowenkron, 2015), and co-editor of the collection “Ethnography of Documents: Anthropological Research among Papers, Stamps, and Bureaucracies” (Ferreira and Lowenkron, 2020). She is a Young Scientist of Our State (FAPERJ). She is also a member of Documenta: Laboratory of Anthropology of the State, Regulation, and of LACED (Laboratory for Research in Ethnicity, Culture, and Development).
