“Ocitocinadas”: nature, gender, science, and morality in discourses on motherhood, childbirth, and breastfeeding
Abstract:
In this presentation, we will reflect on the ideology of the humanized childbirth movement and the construction of a new meaning assigned to motherhood. In this ideology, composed through a bricolage of science and alternative worldviews, motherhood is understood as a fundamentally bodily experience that unfolds primarily in and through the mother’s body. Therefore, it is an experience that focuses mainly on pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period, encompassing “natural birth,” exclusive, prolonged, and on-demand breastfeeding. Thus, we will seek to reflect on the intersections between gender, nature, science, and morality in this conception of motherhood.
